Welcome to the home page of Calgary Nepalese Community Association web site. We
are a non-political and secular organization - people of Nepalese origin who
made Calgary a home. With its own vibrant
culture and traditions, the Nepalese ethnic group is another diverse tile in the
multi-ethnic mosaic of Calgary city which is the fourth largest city in Canada
Nepal is situated at the foot of Mt. Everest , the highest peak of the world. Nepal is the birthplace of Gautama Buddha and
also Sita, the queen in the Hindu epic story of Ramayana. It is also the land of
legendry warriors Gurkhas, the world famous mountaineers Sherpas and mythical
figure "Yeti".
This Association was first started and officially registered in 1985 by a
handful of Nepalese medical students at the University of Calgary with a
helping hand from Canadian friends. When students returned home after the
completion of their study,
the Association remained dormant for some period of time. With the economic
globalization, Canada opened its door to the international skilled labor in the mid-nineties, the influx of Nepalese continued in Calgary. The
resemblance of the view of Rockies from Calgary gives a homely feeling to the Nepalese population
of their own Himalayas and landscape of mountains. Influenced by
its unique beauty and the better life-style of Calgary , as well as extensive
job opportunities in
Calgary , lots of them decided to settle in this City . With increasing Nepalese
populace in Calgary , it was felt that organizing the Nepalese community at this
stage will strengthen the social cohesiveness and harmony. A public meeting was
held in 2001 and the meeting decided to reactivate this Association.
Now the Association has become a full-fledged organization and holds a great
pride in being able to instill sense of belonging among the Canadian-Nepali
community here in Calgary. We are charged up to promote and perpetuate our
culturally enriched Himalayan traditions to our new generation in Calgary . We
hope revival of our culture and tradition will ultimately take a deep root in
the heart of western Canada . We have visions and commitments to enable our
community though smaller but a vital segment of the colorful ethno-Cultural
mosaic of Calgary. We endeavor to contribute our role to the
multi-cultural atmosphere of burgeoning societies in Calgary and to make Calgary
culturally vibrant.
